Basic Course for Instructors
on Clinical Simulation

The Basic Course for Instructors on Clinical Simulation is a respond to the need of training of instructors for the development of classes and courses on simulation, providing them with the appropriate tools that are adapted to the needs of the Portuguese simulation centres.

Under the responsibility of Carla Sá Couto, director of the Biomedical Simulation Centre of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto (FMUP) and researcher of CINTESIS, this Continuing Education Unit allows to recognise and apply different tools used in biomedical simulation, design simulation courses and apply basic debriefing techniques.

Specialization course
in human dissection

The Specialization course in human dissection aims to revisit and/or broaden the knowledge on the anatomy of the different parts of the human body, learn or improve cadaveric dissection techniques for identification, isolation and preservation of the anatomic structures, and establish correlations between the morphology and the function and between the morphology and imaging-based aspects.

This course is designed for resident medical doctors and surgical and medical specialists, as well as professionals of other health areas and is under the responsibility of Dulce Madeira, Professor of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto and researcher of the research group Charter – Challenges and Strategies in Health Research of CINTESIS.

Basic Course
in Clinical Research

The Basic Course in Clinical Research (CuBIC, by its acronym in Portuguese) was conceived by the Department of Community Medicine, Health Information and Decision (MEDCIDS) of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto (FMUP) with the objective of contributing to the excellency in research of Medicine students, resident doctors, medical specialists, and other health professionals.

Designed to teach the basics of Research Methodology and Biostatistics, this course fills the loophole in continuing education resulting from the growing interest in the development of clinical research projects.

Part of the teaching staff of the course are collaborators and members of MEDICDS and CINTESIS. The scientific coordination is under the responsibility of João Fonseca, researcher of CINTESIS, and of Altamiro da Costa Pereira, director of the Department and coordinator the R&D Unit.

Advanced Postgraduation Course in Clinical and Health Services Research

The Advanced Postgraduation Course in Clinical and Health Services Research (CEAICSS in Portuguese) aims to provide the students with the knowledge, skills, and competences that allow them to conceive and develop significant clinical research works in this field, according to the highest quality standards, and disseminate the results of such works through appropriate means.

Luís Azevedo, professor of the Department of Community Medicine, Health Information and Decision (MEDCIDS) of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto (FMUP) and researcher of CINTESIS, is responsible for this course. Several other researchers of CINTESIS are also part of the teaching body.

Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis in Family Medicine

In the context of continuing education, the course Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis in Family Medicine of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto(FMUP) aims at training family doctors to carry out accurate and autonomous research, following the protocol of the Cochrane Systematic Reviews.

Disseção Anatómica do encéfalo humano e neuroanatomia

Human Brain Dissection and Neuroanatomy

Addressed towards medical doctors, dentists, pharmacists, psychologists, and in general to professionals of the Health Sciences field, the Course in Human Brain Dissection and Neuroanatomy of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto (FMUP) aims to broaden the knowledge of surface anatomy of different regions of the brain, its internal organization and basic functions.

This continuing education unit, directed by the CINTESIS researcher Susana Silva, allows the students to improve dissection techniques, understand the tridimensional organization of the brain and correlate morphology, function and imaging-based aspects.

Addressed towards journalists, journalism students and communication professionals, the course To inform about Science & Health is part of the Postgraduate training activities of the Department of Community Medicine, Health Information and Decision (MEDCIDS) of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto (FMUP), supported by CINTESIS.

Carlos Martins, professor and researcher of CINTESIS, is responsible for this course that was launched for the first time in 2017. The objective is to improve the skills of the Media professionals regarding Science, Medicine and Health, by interpreting clinical research results, identifying pseudoscience and recognizing information biases.

Update Course
in Vertebral Column

Directed to intern medical doctor, surgical and medical specialists, namely orthopaedists and Neurosurgeons, the Update Course in Vertebral Column of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto(FMUP) aims to promote and broaden theoretical and practical knowledge acquisition about the anatomy of the vertebral column and the techniques for the surgical approach to each of its regions.

Under the coordination of Dulce Madeira, researcher of the research group Charter – Challenges and Strategies in Health Research of CINTESIS, this continuing education course includes theoretical pre-lectures on surface, macroscopy, imaging, and functional anatomy, as well as a practical component during which different techniques of surgical approaches are performed in corpses under the supervision of tutors.

Preventive Medicine

Directed to medical students, the Evidence Based Preventive Medicine course of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto (FMUP) aims to provide the students with the knowledge and skills to identify effective preventive activities according to scientific evidence, and recognise pseudoscience, information bias and potential harms of prevention in the context of clinical practice.

Summer School

The Summer School is an annual initiative that was first launched in 2005. Currently, the event is organised by the Department of Community Medicine, Health Information and Decision of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto (MEDCIDS-FMUP), with the support of CINTESIS.

During several weeks, the Summer School imparts several courses directed to health professionals, researchers and students of different areas of knowledge, such as Medicine, Health Sciences, Mathematics and Statistics, among others. The objective is to provide the participants with basic knowledge on Clinical Research and Health Services, Biostatistics and Medical Informatics.

Several researchers of CINTESIS lecture on this Summer School joined by renowned international specialists, all under the responsibility of Altamiro da Costa Pereira, coordinator of that R&D Unit.
