A study carried out by Cintesis researchers looked at records of hospitalizations for acute bronchiolitis between 2000 and 2015 in all public hospitals. Altogether, there were 80 491 hospitalizations, which gives an average of five thousand a year only in the National Health Service.

According to the JN, who talked to the authors of the study, the cases have been increasing especially in infants under three months of age. The North and Center regions of the country are the most affected.

This work also shows that boys are “more fragile”. In fact, “of the total hospitalizations in 16 years, 59.7% were boys and 40.3% were girls”.

“The initial symptoms are blocked or runny nose, and dry cough that progressively worsen. Breathing can become noisy and wheezing (a sound similar to a kitten meowing) and some babies show signs of respiratory effort,” it can be read in the piece.
