José Paulo is the Principal Investigator of the Research Group NeuroGen – Neuronal Degeneration & Regeneration of CINTESIS.

He graduated from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto (FMUP), in 1986, and earned his doctorate from the same faculty ten years later.  He began his career in 1985, at the Department of Anatomy of FMUP, where he now is an Assistant Professor.

José Paulo Andrade’s research focusses on the neuroanatomic and behavioral aspects of different types of diets (proteic malnutrition, calorie restriction) with special emphasis on the effects on the Limbic System, particularly in the formation of the hippocampus and the entorhinal cortex. Recently, he has been studying the effects of antioxidants present in wine and in green tea and the antioxidants effects on the same limbic regions at a morphological, behavioral and biochemical level. He also researches the effects of high calorie and high fat diets in the neurogenesis of the hippocampus formation.

He is a reviewer for several scientific journals and has more than 1.200 citations (Scopus data) of his publications.
