How does group immunity strategy work? What are the risks that its application could carry in the current phase of the new coronavirus pandemic?

Bernardo Sousa-Pinto, a researcher at CINTESIS – Center for Health Technology and Services Research and professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto, speaks with JPN about this strategy that has been followed in some countries. And he warns: as “we are all susceptible” to being infected, this would cause “a large proportion of individuals to require hospital treatment at the same time, much greater than the health services could handle.”

In these statements, the official also advocates carrying out more tests on the virus and restrictive measures to contain its spread and the disruption of the health system.
