HIV, syphilis and hepatitis B are some of the infectious diseases for which pregnant women are recommended to be screened. In Portugal, the access to these tests is easy and free, but this is not the case of developing countries, namely in Africa. For this reason, Ana Luísa Neves, a Cintesis researcher, developed a protype that allows to carry out these tests with a single blood drop. The work has already earned her an important innovation award at the United States of América. “Everyday, 830 pregnant women die from pregnancy and delivery-related complications. Most of these deaths can be avoided a infectious diseases screening test,” said the researcher in an interview to the program “Mentes que Brilham”of the Porto Canal.
