The number of hospital admissions in patients with dementia increased fivefold from 2000 to 2014. This is one of the results from a study carried out at the Center for Health Technology and Services Research (CINTESIS), a research unit based at the University of Porto.

The study also found that during those 15 years 288,000 admissions were recorded in public hospitals in the country, which is equivalent to about 5% of all hospitalizations among people aged 60 or older.
