JN // Students From Private High Schools Fail More At University

Medical students from private schools are not as well prepared as their public school counterparts to meet the requirement of Higher Education. The conclusions are presented in a scientific study led by Cristina Santos, researcher of CINTESIS.

Published in the scientific journal BMC Medical Education, the study focused on the data of more than 1,700 students of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto (FMUP) who attended this institution between 2007 and 2014. 45% had completed secondary education in a private institution.

Data analysis revealed that students from private schools had a higher failure rate in at least one curricular unit during the first year of studies (43% private vs. 34% public). In addition, they presented, on average, lower marks, especially in the first three academic years.
