Fernando Schmitt is a CINTESIS integrated researcher working in the group Charter of the Thematic Line 1 – Preventive Medicine & Societal Challenges.
He earned his Ph.D. from the Paulista State University (UNESP) in 1990. He is a Professor of Pathology at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto (FMUP), leader of the Molecular Pathology Unit in IPATIMUP, President of the Portuguese Society of Cytology, President of the International Society of Mammary Pathology, and President-elect and Secretary-General of the International Academy of Cytology (IAC). He is one of the most renowned specialists in Cytopathology and Breast Pathology worldwide, with more than 500 articles in scientific journals and books on breast cancer, Cytopathology and Molecular Pathology.
He was the Director of the National Health Laboratory of Luxembourg for two years, leading more than 200 people and actively participating in the definition of public health policies in that country. In the last decade, he was distinguished with three major awards, two of which from international institutions.
