CINTESIS researcher Pedro Machado dos Santos was awarded the 2024 Beltrán Báguena Prize – Social and Behavioral Sciences Section for the best original article published in the Spanish Journal of Geriatrics and Gerontology in 2023.
The article, entitled “Artificial intelligence-based reminiscence program based on intangible cultural heritage for older people: a pilot study”, made it possible to assess the feasibility and effectiveness of a new application.
As can be read in the article published on the website of the Fundació Salut i Envelliment of the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), the application, called LONG-REMI, uses artificial intelligence to help older people remember important moments in their lives, culture and traditions, and a first prototype has been tested.
According to Pedro Machado dos Santos, “this study is part of ongoing collaborative work with colleagues from different Portuguese and Spanish universities”.
“The research sample included participants over the age of 65, including people without cognitive impairment and those with mild or moderate cognitive impairment, from six day care centers in Spain and Portugal, and demonstrated the ease of use of this application, as well as its usefulness for future cognitive therapies,” can be read on the Spanish Foundation’s website.
The study, coordinated by the UAB’s Fundació Salut i Envelliment, involved CINTESIS – Center for Health Technology and Services Research, the School of Education of the Polytechnic Institute of Coimbra, the Soft Computing Research Group at the Artificial Intelligence Research Center of the UPC and the UX/UI Design Department of the UOC.
The prize was awarded as part of the 64th Congress of the Spanish Society of Geriatrics and Gerontology (SEGC).
