Carlos Vaz, a researcher at CINTESIS and professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto (FMUP), is the new president of the Portuguese Society of Osteoporosis and Metabolic Bone Diseases (SPODOM), a position he will hold for the next two years.

In this mandate, initiated after SPODOM’s General Assembly, which took place last March 24, the board, led by Carlos Vaz, assumes as a goal the organization of medical training actions, namely training courses and a national congress, as well as the involvement with other health professionals connected to osteoporosis.

According to the new president, the priority is to “increase awareness of the importance of this area and its impact across various medical specialities”.

Founded in May 1988, SPODOM is a medical association that contributes to the study, research, prevention and treatment of metabolic bone diseases in their different aspects, and to the fight against osteoporosis, in particular. This society also has the mission to promote and disseminate scientific and epidemiological studies, to foster education, research and training, through scientific meetings, scholarships and the awarding of prizes to works that stand out in this area.

He holds a degree and a doctorate in Medicine, is a rheumatologist and researcher at CINTESIS, and is currently a member of the research group GeriMHealth. Alongside his activity as a clinician and as a professor, Carlos Vaz has played roles in various national and international associations and scientific societies, such as the Portuguese Society of Rheumatology, the Portuguese Spinal Pathology Society, the American College of Rheumatology and the American Geriatric Society.
