Fernando Schmitt, a researcher at CINTESIS – Center for Health Technology and Services Research and coordinator of the Associate Laboratory RISE – Health Research Network and full professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto (FMUP), will be joining the Genetics and Genomics Subcommittee of the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), within the scope of the World Health Organization (WHO).
In reaction to the announcement, the researcher, professor and pathologist said that this appointment is “an honor” and also considered that joining the IARC is “recognition” of his “expertise” in the area, as well as the work he has done throughout his career.
As a member of this subcommittee, Fernando Schmitt will play an active role in the preparation of the 6th edition of the WHO Classification of Tumors, namely in the revision of information on the genetics and genomics of tumors.
The task he will carry out in this subcommittee will contribute to the information available in the WHO blue books that classify the different tumors, including sections focused specifically on the genetics of each one.
By participating in the development of the blue books, which should begin at the end of 2024, Fernando Schmitt will contribute to diagnosis and research in this area.
