Rui Amaral Mendes, a CINTESIS researcher, and professor at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Porto (FMUP), is the new Deputy Editor of the British Medical Journal Case Reports (BMJ Case Reports). With this appointment, he becomes the ‘second in command’, reinforcing the role of “right arm” of the Editor-in-Chief, Seema Biswas.
“I consider this invitation an enormous honor, for two reasons: first because the British Medical Journal Case Reports is one of the flagships of the prestigious British Medical Journal, responsible for the world’s largest repertoire of case reports, a fact that has made it a valuable instrument of clinical education for colleagues in various specialties; second because the new position reflects the recognition of the work I have done in recent years as Associate Editor.
His main functions will be to “assist” the Editor-in-Chief in the “management and evaluation of the editorial and peer-review process, with a particular focus on the areas of Ethics and Global Health”.
The functions of Deputy Editor of the BMJ Case Reports will be combined with those already performed as Associate Editor responsible for the areas of “Oral and Maxillofacial Medicine and Surgery, Oral Oncology, and Dentistry”.
Rui Amaral Mendes is an integrated researcher of the Charter – Challenges and Strategies in Health Research Group of CINTESIS@RISE and professor at FMUP. D. in Pathology and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery from the VU Universiteit Amsterdam, he taught at the Portuguese Catholic University and at the University of Michigan. In 2015, he became an Adjunct Professor at Case Western Reserve University. He is also Associate Editor of the Journal of Oral Pathology and Medicine and member of the Editorial Board of Oral Diseases (two of the leading and oldest scientific journals in the field of Medicine and Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology).
In addition, he is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and a fellow of the International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and the International Academy of Oral Oncology. He is also a member of the Social Accountability Panel of the Association for Medical Education in Europe (AMEE).
