Rui Nunes and Miguel Ricou, researchers at CINTESIS – Center for Health Technology and Services Research and professors at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto (FMUP), are among the new members appointed to the National Ethics Council for Life Sciences (CNECV in Portuguese).
The inauguration took place on July 21st, at the Portuguese Parliament. Besides Rui Nunes, appointed by the Medico-Legal Council of the National Institute of Forensic Medicine, and Miguel Ricou, appointed by the Portuguese Association of Psychologists, the CNECV includes 19 other specialists from various scientific areas.
Created in 1990, this independent advisory body, which has been working since 2009 at the Parliament, has as its mission “to analyze the ethical problems raised by scientific progress in the fields of biology, medicine or health in general and the life sciences.“
Made up of six people elected by the Parliament, this national council also includes ten people appointed by various entities and professional associations, and other three people of “recognized scientific merit in biology, medicine or health in general and the life sciences” and two people of “recognized scientific merit in law, sociology or philosophy”, all appointed by resolution of the Council of Ministers.
