The ” Menos Sal Portugal” (Less Salt Portugal initiative joins the fight against excess salt in our country. In an initial stage, CINTESIS researchers will intervene with 500 volunteers between 20 and 70 years of age, living in the metropolitan area of Lisbon, with the aim of modifying lifestyles and thus reducing salt intake.
“We hope that the change in lifestyle, especially in eating habits, will have a positive impact on the study population and that the changes observed will translate into lasting health gains,” explains Conceição Calhau (CINTESIS / NOVA Medical School), in statements to the Jornal de Notícias.
According to Jorge Polónia (CINTESIS / FMUP), Portuguese consume more than twice the maximum amount of salt recommended. The effects are felt on health, with two million hypertensive nationwide and an increased risk of stroke, cardiovascular disease and cancer. Learn more here.
