José Manuel Silva is an integrated researcher of the AgeingC group, Thematic Line 1 – Preventive Medicine and Societal Challenges of CINTESIS.
He earned his Doctoral Degree in Education Sciences from the University of Extremadura (Spain), his Master Degree in the same field from the University of Boston (USA), his Graduate Degree in History from the University of Lisbon, and a post-graduate level in Strategic Management from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia.
He works as a professor since 1974 and is a specialist in school leadership and management. He has held different teaching and coordination positions at the Polytechnic Institute of Leiria, acting as President of the Scientific Council, of the Representative Assembly and of the Board of Directors; and as Vice-president from 2009 to 2013. He was the Regional Director of Education of Central Portugal, and an external evaluation expert of the Inspection General of Education and Science. Since 2013, he presides the Board of Directors of the Santa Maria Health School (Porto).
He is a consultant in international projects, a researcher in the field of Education, a member of the Scientific Council of the journal EDUCAR, of the Autonomous University of de Barcelona, and author/co-author of several works and scientific articles published in national and international journals. He has been in politics since 1990, having served two terms as councillor of the Municipal Council of Leiria, one of them in charge of the Education and Youth Office. José Manuel Silva has been elected municipal deputy for several times, and he is currently the President of the Municipal Assembly of Leiria.
