About PerMed
The Personalized Medicine research group (PerMed – Personalized Medicine) of CINTESIS/Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto aims to identify the most appropriate treatments for individual patients by studying complex biological systems. Our research uses a systemic approach to analyze pharmacological problems at the experimental and clinical level of individual patients diagnosed with a disease, as is the case in oncology. However, our essential motivation lies in understanding why a treatment that is highly effective for one person may prove ineffective or inefficient for another.
Some of our projects already incorporate molecular pharmacology in combination with patients’ genetic information, allowing for a deeper understanding of the threats and opportunities to our health. In the long term, we aim to understand how molecular, clinical, or lifestyle data can support disease prevention, diagnosis, or treatment. Our group also pays special attention to the reconciliation of research and teaching in various courses, addressing topics such as the reuse of drugs for various conditions, the creation of new models for drug combinations, the exploitation of peptides in biomedical innovation, the study of drug metabolism, the development of innovative drug delivery strategies, the identification of new biomarkers in clinical medicine and the use of basic pharmacokinetic and physiological (PBPK) modeling as an essential tool in the advancement of personalized and translational medicine.
