Do not smoke, adopt a balanced diet, eradicate helicobacter pylori and undertake an upper endoscopy together with the already recommended colonoscopy. This is the way to reduce gastric cancer in Portugal, says the CINTESIS researcher Mário Dinis-Ribeiro, winner of the Bial Award in Clinical Medicine 2018.
“The lifetime risk of having gastric cancer is between 1 and 2%, which means that at least one in every 100 people may suffer from this disease. Unfortunately, since the diagnosis is still very late, if we use the number of the two people, only one will live for more than a year,” says Mário Dinis-Ribeiro to the PUBLICOjournal.
