The number of hospitalizations for schizophrenia or other psychotic disorders has been decreasing in public hospitals in recent years, but many patients end up having to be readmitted, reveals a study by CINTESIS and the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto (FMUP).
According to the report in the newspaper Público, “the increasing pressure to decrease the length of hospital stay can lead to higher rates of readmission.”
Manuel Gonçalves-Pinho, a CINTESIS/FMUP researcher, warns that it is necessary to “reinforce investment in mental health care, which covers different levels, from proximity care to hospitals and long-term inpatient units, clearly undersized for the needs of our country”.
