The 1st Work Meeting and Public Presentation of the new RISE-Health Research Unit will take place on June 28 in the Auditorium of the Center for Medical Research (CIM) of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto (FMUP).

The initiative will include representatives of the various academic bodies involved and representatives of the authorities, who will be present at the official opening, scheduled for 12h00.

Starting at 10h00, Fernando Schmitt, coordinator of the new Unit, will publicly present RISE-Health’s mission, which essentially consists of “carrying out high-quality, innovative, interdisciplinary clinical and translational research with an impact on the community, in a wide range of clinical areas and scientific fields”.

The heads of the seven thematic lines of research will speak throughout the morning, starting with Adelino Leite-Moreira, from TL1 – Clinical and Translational Research in Cardiovascular Diseases.

This will be followed by Elsa Azevedo, who coordinates TL2 – Neurosciences, Luís Taborda Barata, in charge of TL3 – Hormones, Infection, Inflammation & Metabolism, Cristina Granja, from TL4 – Hospital Care & Clinical Outcomes, and Paulo Correia de Sá, responsible for TL5 – Clinical Translation on Drug Targets and Innovative Biomedicines.

The presentation of the thematic lines will end with interventions from Luís Azevedo and Elisa Keating, heads of TL6 – Digital Transformation, Artificial Intelligence, Data and Decision Sciences in Health and TL7 – Community Care & Prevention, respectively.

After a lunch break, the program will continue at 14h00 with work meetings and a tour around the facilities.

The leaders and researchers of this Unit, who work in key areas such as Cardiovascular Sciences, Metabolism, Hospital Care, Prevention, Drugs, Digital Health and Artificial Intelligence, are prominent names in the national and international scientific panorama.

With more than 1,300 researchers, 637 of whom are integrated researchers, RISE-Health is already the largest Research Unit in the country, according to data from the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), under the Multiannual Funding Program for R&D Units 2023/2024.

RISE-Health is the result of themerger of CINTESISCenter for Health Technology and Services Research, UnICCardiovascular Research and Development Unit, MedInUPCenter for Pharmacological Research and Drug Innovation and CICS-UBICenter for Health Sciences Research.

Based at FMUP, this new research unit will have management centers in 5 organic units of the University of Porto ( Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas Abel Salazar and the Faculties of Pharmacy, Dental Medicine, and Sciences & Nutrition), in addition to 11 other institutions, namely in 5 public universities (University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro, Algarve, Aveiro, Beira Interior and Madeira) and 2 Private Higher Education Institutions (Universities Fernando Pessoa and Portucalense), 3 Nursing Schools ( Nursing School of Porto, Santa Maria Higher School of Health and IP Santarém Higher School of Nursing) and the Higher School of Health of the Polytechnic of Porto.
