He graduated from the Faculty of Dental Medicine, the University of Porto in 2000 and completed his Ph.D. in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Pathology in 2011 from the VU Universiteit Amsterdam. He was the Clinical Director of the University Dental Clinic of the Catholic University of Portugal and worked as a Professor at the same institution (2011 to 2015), where he coordinated the Integrated Master’s Degree in Dental Medicine and the Postgraduate Degree in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology. He has taught at educational institutions in Portugal and other countries, including the University of Michigan.
He has held various academic positions and belongs to several scientific societies (he is a Fellow of the International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and the International Academy of Oral Oncology and a full member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology). He is a member of the editorial board of Oral Diseases and is an Associate Editor of the British Medical Journal – Case Reports and the Journal of Oral Pathology and Medicine.
He has authored (as leading author or coordinator) international guidelines and scientific articles published in leading scientific journals. He is a professor at the Case Western Reserve University (since 2014) and a researcher at the Center for Research in Higher Education Policy (CIPES).
