Conceição Calhau, a CINTESIS researcher and professor at the NOVA Medical School, was in SIC Notícias to talk about some of the main results of the study she coordinated on the role of the intestinal microbiota in COVID-19.

According to research, the disease caused by SARS-CoV-2 tends to be more severe in patients with a less healthy gut.

The authors speak of a relationship between the imbalance of the gut microbiota and the severity of COVID-19. The lower diversity of bacteria and the lower presence of beneficial bacteria in the gut will thus have a negative impact on immunity against the disease.
