“The time we spend using digital devices can compromise language development,” is the conclusion of a study carried out by researchers from CINTESIS – Center for Health Technology and Services Research / School of Health at the University of Aveiro.
The article “Use of digital devices, family functioning and language development in preschool children: a cross-sectional study” was published in the journal CoDAS (Communication Disorders, Audiology and Swallowing) and was written by Maria Inês Gomes, Marisa Lousada and Daniela Figueiredo.
The study aimed to analyze the association between the use of digital devices, family dynamics, and language development. Ninety-three Portuguese families took part.
According to the conclusions, “the impact of the use of digital devices and the role of family functioning in children’s language development stand out”.
These results suggest that “moderate use of digital devices and balanced family functioning are factors that facilitate good language development”.
