Teresa Magalhães is a researcher at CINTESIS, working in the research group Health for All of the Thematic Line (LT1) – Preventive Medicine & Societal Challenges.

She has a degree in Medicine (1986), a Ph.D. in Social Medicine (1997), and an Aggregation in Medical Sociology (2004) from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto (FMUP). She is a Forensic Medicine specialist (1997), has competence in Management of Health Units, in Evaluation of Bodily Injury and Expert Evaluation from the Social Security and from the Portuguese Order of Doctors. She was the director of the Northern delegation of the National Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences (INMLCF) and an adviser to the Medico-Legal Council (2001-2014).

Her vast expert activity includes thousands of forensic examinations. She has published more than two hundred articles and dozens of book chapters. She has received the Medal of Merit of the Mediterranean Academy of Forensic Sciences, the Medal of Merit of the Forensic Academy of Legal Medicine, and the Mention of Merit for the Contribution to the Development of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences in the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP).

She is currently a Guest Associate Professor at FMUP, a Full Professor at the Instituto Superior de Ciências da Saúde – CESPU, and the president of the Portuguese Society for the Study of Abused and Neglected Children as well as Portugal’s representative to the European Council of Legal Medicine.
