A team of researchers from CINTESIS/NOVA Medical School won the most recent edition of the Healthy Living Awards, with the “Project of the year in Clinical Nutrition”.
The awarded project is entitled “Intermittent energy restriction ameliorates adipose tissue-associated inflammation in adults with obesity: a randomised controlled trial”. It is part of the Master’s thesis in Human Nutrition and Metabolism of Inês Castela and its principal investigator is Diana Teixeira, both from CINTESIS/NOVA Medical School.
According to the news published by the NOVA Medical School, “the results of this study showed that, after 12 weeks of intervention, both interventions with intermittent or continuous energy restriction, planned with the same percentage of energy restriction, were equally effective in weight loss in obese adults (BMI > 35 kg/m2).”
Additionally, “the intermittent energy-restricted intervention resulted in significant improvements in reducing obesity-associated insulin resistance and inflammation compared with the continuous energy-restricted intervention.”
The results have “potential to optimize personalized intervention in the treatment of obesity.”
