CINTESIS – Center for Health Technology and Services Research is present at the science meeting Encontro Ciência 2018, which takes place from July 2 to 4, at the Lisbon Congress Center.

Among the participants in the biggest science meeting that is held in Portugal, there will be the President Manuel Rebelo de Sousa, the Prime Minister António Costa, the Commissioner for Research, Science and Innovation, Carlos Moedas, and the Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education Manuel Heitor, as well as several other Portuguese Ministers and representatives of international scientific institutions.

This year’s edition, CINTESIS is participating with three oral communications and eight scientific posters. Carlos Sequeira, principal investigator of the NursID group (CINTESIS / ESEP), will present the work “Contributions of Research and Innovation in Nursing to the Improvement of People’s Health”. Alberto Freitas, leader of the research group 2D4H at CINTESIS / FMUP, will talk about “Analysis of secondary health data – limitations and opportunities”, giving examples in the context of hospital admission and emergency services. On the other hand, Óscar Ribeiro, leader of the research group AgeingC (CINTESIS / University of Aveiro), will focus on the results of the ongoing project PT100 – Study of the Centenaries of Porto and its satellite studies, with an oral communication rightly entitled “Between frailty and success in advanced longevity: the case of the centennial population.”

The posters with which CINTESIS will participate in the event will be presented by researchers of different hubs. The main topics to be discussed are: Fraud in Research, Decision-Making in Assisted Death, Palliative Care, Sleep Intervention, Self-Management of Oncological Disease, Obstructive Sleep Apnea, and Clinical Supervision in Nursing.

The researchers present at this event represent the three Thematic Research Lines of CINTESIS, the LT1 – Preventive Medicine & Societal Challenges, which investigates in the area of health prevention and the most relevant societal challenges of the present such as ageing, obesity and care; LT2 – Clinical & Translational Research, which aims to develop new knowledge and new products to support the diagnosis and treatment of some of the most prevalent diseases, such as Cancer, Dementia and cardiovascular diseases; and LT 3 – Health Data & Decision Sciences & Information Technology, focused on the development of methodologies, tools and technologies aimed at gathering and analyzing complex biomedical data and information (e.g. Big Data and Artificial Intelligence), as well as contributing to the decision-making process and to the evaluation of health interventions (Health Technology Assessment).

The objective of the 2018 Science Meeting is to “promote a broad debate of the main topics and challenges of the scientific agenda”, stimulating the interaction between researchers, the business sector and the general public. The discussion will also address the strategic challenges associated with the goals of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and the 9th European Framework Program for Research and Innovation 2021-2028.

South Africa is the guest county of this year’s edition, which is promoted by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology in collaboration with the National Agency for Scientific and Technological Culture Ciência Viva and the Parliamentary Commission for Education and Science; under the sponsorship of the Portugal’s Government through the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education.
