Two works developed by researchers from CINTESIS and the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto (FMUP) won prizes at the International Congress of the European Respiratory Society (ERS), which took place in Milan, Italy, from September 9 to 13, under the theme “Every breath counts”.

The ConectAR project has won the European Respiratory Society/European Lung Foundation (ERS/ELF) Award for “Best Abstract in Patient-Centered Research”. The award went to Ana Sá-Sousa, from CINTESIS@RISE/FMUP, as the project’s principal investigator (photo).

The work, presented at this Congress, is entitled “Co-creating a self-learning program for asthma patients: patients’ and health professionals’ perspectives on relevant topics”.

Sponsored by the European Lung Foundation, this award honors the work that has proven to be the most effective and impactful example of patient involvement in medical research. ConectAR, which involves several CINTESIS@RISE and FMUP researchers, is funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT).

Tiago Jacinto, also a researcher at CINTESIS@RISE and a professor at FMUP, won another award at the international event in the “Best Abstracts in Allied Health Professionals” category for his paper “Weight associates positively with FeNO in adult females but not males in a large healthy population-based sample”.

The main conclusions indicate that “weight seems to be more associated than height with an increase in FeNO in adult women, which makes it advisable to carry out more studies on the potential relationship between type 2 inflammation and an increase in adipose tissue in women, and evidence of the strong influence of passive exposure to cigarette smoke on FeNO, even in non-smokers”.
