Rui Nunes, a Full Professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto (FMUP), received the Medal of Full Academician of the Portuguese National Academy of Medicine (ANMP).
The medal was awarded in an official ceremony that took place on May 10, at the Center Regional Section of the Portuguese Medical Association, in Coimbra, attended by the president, Duarte Nuno Vieira.
Founded in 1991 by the centenary Lisbon Society of Medical Sciences, the Portuguese National Academy of Medicine “brings together scholars and other professionals with the aim of discussing issues relevant to national and international medicine.”
Rui Nunes graduated in Medicine from FMUP in 1985, obtained his Ph.D. in Bioethics in 2002, and, later, the titles of Agregado in Medical Sociology and Agregado in Bioethics. He is a Full Professor at FMUP, a researcher at CINTESIS – Center for Health Technology and Services Research, a member of the Medical-Legal Council (Ministry of Justice), a member of the Ethics Committee of the National Institute of Legal Medicine, a member of the Ethics Committee of the Shared Services of the Ministry of Health, a member of the Ethics Committee of the University Hospital Center of São João, and was an evaluator for the Judiciary Studies Center. He has received several national and international awards and has publicly stood out for his defense of certain social causes, such as the proposal to legalize the living-will (2006), the holding of a referendum on euthanasia (2007), and more recently the proposal to UNESCO of a Universal Declaration of Gender Equality.
